Better Ask Barry: What happened to the city limits sign?
If you look around, you’ll see road signs at the city limits of Del Rey Oaks, Monterey, Marina, Greenfield, Soledad, Castroville and other cities.
If you drive into Salinas on Highway 68, you won’t find a sign — no matter how closely you look.
KION viewer Jerry Landesman contacted our Barry Brown, saying there used to be a sign, but it’s long gone. He’d like to see it replaced.
“My best guess is it was stolen,” said Salinas City Councilman Steve McShane. “I mean, that happens. Somebody’s got the city limits sign to Salinas in their garage someplace.”
McShane says a replacement is on the way.
“We’re working with Assemblyman Riva’s office and Caltrans to get it replaced,” he said. “Caltrans is supposed to have something in place within a couple of months.”
Most drivers don’t pay a lot of attention to city limits signs, but McShane says this is kind of a big deal.
“At the end of the day, this sign represents our identity for the city of Salinas. People coming from Monterey need to know that we’re proud of Salinas and we welcome them.”
McShane and others hope that someday, like in other cities, there will be an even bigger marquee entrance to the city. For now, replacing a green metal sign is a small step forward.
