Earth Day beach cleanup in Monterey

Kayaks, tanning chairs, runners…Central Coast beaches are packed this time of the year.

While the beaches in Monterey are pretty clean, it only takes a small piece of plastic to do damage to marine life. “If that gets a little tear on the animal, then it could be the end of it,” says Katlyn Taylor with Discovery Whale Watch

At first glance you might not see the trash on Del Monte Beach, but at a closer look, it’s easy to see. While it’s easy to blame to problem on tourists, they are actually not to blame. Katlyn says, “It’s kind of more related to the rain, that pushes things from the land to the ocean. If it’s been really windy, or there has been a lot of surf action on the beach then that is putting things that were in the sea back on the sand.”

With Earth Day right around the corner, Discover Whale Watch is teaming with CSUMB to cleanup the beach this Sunday. Its starts at 4:00-6:00 PM, beginning at the Wharf 2 in Monterey.
