Tax deadline day nears as IRS predicts record-breaking amount of extensions filed
Monterey County residents who haven’t filed their tax returns just yet are likely to see some help on the way as deadline day approaches.
The push to complete all the necessary paperwork for tax season comes as the Monday April 15 deadline is just days away.
Tax professionals say the primary concern is for those who owe money to the IRS, as payments are due on that day and cannot be extended (Although some repayment options are available).
“Even if you don’t have enough moeny to pay, at least file an extension so you don’t suffer penalties,” says Carlos Lopez with Lopez Tax Service. “There are penalties for paying late and for filing late so at least file that extension if you know you won’t be able to file your tax return in time.”
And if you need to file last-minute, there’s a couple of options set for Monday in Monterey County.
The United Way is offering free tax prep services at two locations, including the Center for Employment Training from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
The United Way’s office will also extend its hours to stay open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, too.
“A lot of offices will be open through the weekend because this year the actual deadline is Monday the 15th,” says Lopez. “No extenders or tax forgiveness days like previous years for payments.”
And if you’re looking to file last minute, you won’t be the only one.
As many as 14.6 million people are expected to file extensions with nearly 8 million LLC’s doing the same.
Once completed with filing your tax return, and if you expect a refund, you should sign up for direct deposit and look to E-File as well.
The combination of the two will result in getting your return quicker than normal.
People who e-file their tax return tend to see their refund in less than 21 days.
