Marchers show support for Blue Card Bill on Cesar Chavez Day
Salinas celebrated Cesar Chavez Day Sunday with a March to celebrate his legacy of helping farm workers, but also to show support for a proposed Blue Card Bill.
It happened at Cesar Chavez Park at 10 a.m. and continued through the afternoon. It was hosted by United Farm Workers, the union Chavez founded, and the union’s president says there is still work that needs to be done.
“We’re also here in support of the Blue Card,” said president Teresa Romero, “The Blue Card will allow agricultural workers and their families the ability to have legal residency where they could work, travel, and give them the opportunity to apply for a Green Card and ultimately citizenship.”
The bill was introduced by Senator Dianne Feinstein and Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren. If it passes, agricultural workers would be able to get a blue card that could be used to get permanent resident status later.
