SUPERPOD: Hundreds of dolphins spotted in Monterey Bay

Monterey Bay was treated with a rare sighting Friday as hundreds of dolphins appeared, swimming alongside a whale watching boat.

Princess Monterey Whale Watching said the superpod encounter of northern right whale dolphins occurred on board the Atlantis Monterey around 9 a.m. The dolphins got their name because they lack a dorsal fin just like the northern right whale.

The whale watching company said there has been so much life flooding the bay this week. Just a couple of days ago, a pod of killer whales was spotted out in the bay. The orcas are attracted to the Monterey Bay in the springtime to hunt migrating gray whales and their calves.
