Greenfield suspends use of weed killer Roundup

Greenfield City Council unanimously adopted a resolution to stop all use of the weed killer Roundup and replace it with “greener” alternatives.

On Tuesday, members of Safe Ag Safe Schools and Greenfield residents attended the city council meeting to voice demands for stronger pesticide regulations in and outside the city.

The Greenfield City Council resolution came after a federal jury awarded $80 million to a California man after determining that Monsanto’s popular weedkiller, Roundup, was a substantial factor in causing his cancer and that the corporation is liable.

“This is a great first step. We are starting with Roundup, but we will continue to fight to eliminate the most hazardous pesticides that affect our community,” said Rosa Lopez, Lideres Campesinas and SASS member.

SASS members said they hope this initiative can move to other cities and school districts in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties.
