Woman ID’d in deadly Capitola crash
UPDATE: 3/27/2019 12:40 p.m. The Capitola Police Department is investigating a fatal accident on 41st Avenue.
The crash was reported around 10:15 a.m. Tuesday near the Chase Bank and Mattress Firm.
60-year-old Cynthia Carey of Mount Hermon died after a van plowed into her smart car causing her to crash into a Metro bus.
Carey was stopped at the light at the Clares Street and 41st Avenue intersection when the van did not stop, hitting her car and pushing it into the intersection where the bus was turning.
Assistant Manager of Mattress Firm, Jay Olson, heard the crash “we heard a large impact and I mean we knew it was a car because you can just tell by that sound.”
He and a coworker ran outside to see the mangled smart car and van outside, “there were people running over there and checking it out. Looks like there were plenty of people calling 911, and we called 911.”
An off duty paramedic was nearby at the time of the accident, they rushed over to help Carey, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers shut down a portion of 41st Avenue near Clares Street while authorities investigated.
“There is some camera footage at this intersection so we’ll be pulling that video and analyze that and speak with the witnesses and drivers to figure out the cause of the collision itself,” said Captian Andrew Dally with Capitola Police Department.
The driver of the van was taken to the hospital but is expected to be ok. Police say he is cooperating with investigators.
There were 8 to 10 people on the bus at the time of the collision, no injuries were reported from passangers.
Investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol played a factor in the fatal accident.
The bus driver, although he does not appear to be at fault, will be tested for drugs and alcohol. “That’s preliminary in part of the process that we go through. It was not at the fault of the operator, just happens that the bus was there when the car collided with it.”
Master Car Wash owner, David Karsan, says he sees close calls at that intersection all the time. “You know, I constantly have to make a U-turn here and people driving by are just not looking or they are distracted one way or another, but I’ve gotten in a couple close calls.”
