Video shows killer whales swimming alongside boat in Monterey

A pod of 10 killer whales were spotted swimming along side a whale watching boat in Monterey.

The marine mammals showed off for a crowd aboard with Princess Monterey Whale Watching around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Photographer and videographer Randy Straka shot video of the encounter and said this was the first good look of the season at a pod of this size.

A tour guide on the Atlantis Monterey said these orcas can travel up to 30 mph and could’ve swam away if they wanted. Instead, the whales stuck around, leaping out of the water.

The animals are attracted to the Monterey Bay in the springtime to hunt migrating gray whales and their calves.
