Some moviegoers scared of Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk after watching Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’
The new horror movie “Us” is causing quite the stir in Santa Cruz. Some people took to social media saying they were so scared, they won’t be visiting the beach town any time soon.
One UC Santa Cruz student even jokingly said they won’t be going back to school.
But all jokes aside, the Santa Cruz film commission said they don’t think they’ll have to worry about tourism going down.
Christina Glynn with the Santa Cruz visitors center and film commission said, “I think it will reach out to a whole new market of visitors who might not have otherwise thought to come here in the first place.”
Glynn added how rare it is for movies filmed in a certain locations to have that actual location be part of the plot.
“The fact that Jordan Peele chose to call Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz is really his tribute to the area that inspired him for this film” said Glynn.
The movie already brought in more than $1 million to the local economy during production. Glynn said they expect it to bring another boost during the Summer months.
‘Us’ broke the record for bringing in the most money during an opening weekend for any original horror film.
It was expected to rack up about $45 million, but ended up bringing in $70.3 million.
