Man behind bars after botched armed robbery in Watsonville

A 19-year-old is behind bars after a botched armed robbery in Watsonville.

It happened at the Main Street Shopping Center nearly two weeks ago, but Philip Martinson was arrested Thursday.

Police say he followed the victim into a store where they had just cashed a check, but later in the parking lot they say Martinson reached for a gun.

He was later seen on surveilance footage running away.

Sgt. Mish Radich with Watsonville Police says it’s a reminder to stay aware of your surroundings. He says, “If you’re doing these things in public places like cashing checks or going to the ATM, definitely be looking over your shoulder, ‘Is there someone watching me? Am I about to be a victim?’ Those are all red flags.”

Martinson was booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail on multiple charges.
