A push for more ethnic studies awareness at California schools

A bill created in the California Assembly would require all California State University (CSU) students to take at least one ethnic studies class (3-unit course) before graduation.

The lone CSU on the Central Coast, California State University Monterey Bay has several ethnic studies courses within the schools humanities and communication majors. Currently they don’t have a requirement for all students, but that will change at the start of next school year.

However, if the bill passes it will make the ethnic studies course a requirement throughout the CSU system. The bill will go to the assembly committee later this month.

Tonight at 5 and 6 p.m. on KION News Channel 5/46 a CSUMB ethnic studies professor and students express why they feel a stronger emphasis on these type of classes will improve relationships with different races, religions and communities.
