Pebble Beach man dies after going overboard during sailboat race in Monterey Bay

UPDATE: 3/14/2019 12:03 p.m. A Pebble Beach man died after he went overboard in the Monterey Bay while racing a sailboat Wednesday night.

According to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, 77-year-old Rick Srigley was taking part in the weekly races put on by the Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club.

Monterey Fire along with the Coast Guard and State Parks lifeguards responded.

Srigley was brought back to shore where paramedics tried to resuscitate him.

He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The boating and sailing community at the harbor, is tight knit. Tina Marie Hamilton is a lives in her boat at the harbor. She says, It’s very sad, you know because I’m sure it was a person probably very, very passionate about sailing, and I’m sure he loved it. I guess it is sad to say he died doing what he loved.”

KION is told that Srigley had lots of friends, and was extremely well-liked.
