PREVIOUS STORY:

Posts from friends and others on social media identify the woman killed in Friday’s officer involved shooting as Brenda Mendoza. A witness tells KION that while she didn’t know Mendoza, and didn’t know who was in the standoff with police, “I just heard (people on scene say) Brenda.”

Another neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, says that Mendoza lived in the green truck that was involved in the incident. She says Mendoza lived there with her boyfriend, and his family lives inside the home. Mendoza allegedly barracaded herself inside the car and was surrounded by responding officers, before being shot and killed. Salinas Police say Mendoza, who they are not yet identifying, was armed.

Witness Veronica Zuniga was on her way home when the scene escalated. “I went to pick up my kid from school. And when I came back, the police were there and we heard the gunshots. I don’t know how many there were but we just hid behind a car.”

The Salinas Police Department will release the names of the officers Wednesday afternoon.

The case is being investigated by the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office.

UPDATE: 3/1/2019 10:30 p.m. A 20-year-old woman is dead after police shot her during a standoff in Salinas on Friday.

Multiple gunshots echoed throughout a neighborhood near East Laurel Drive and Sanborn Road, which ended the hours-long standoff.

Salinas police had been called to that area over reports of a woman making threats against another woman inside her home.

“We responded and we communicated with the suspect who had taken barricade inside of a vehicle in front of a private residence,” said Adele Frese, the Salinas police chief.

Frese said the woman had at least one gun with her. Police used negotiators to try to get her to surrender peacefully, but sometime during the standoff, Frese said officers had to shoot.

“Two to three officers… I cannot confirm right now if it’s two or three officers who fired their weapons at the suspect,” she said.

The woman died soon after those shots were fired. No police were hurt. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy.

Frese will release their names as the investigation continues. Those living within the crime scene area say it was a chaotic day.

“I had to park really far away, probably like three or four blocks away,” said one resident who did not want to be identified. “It’s kind of scary for people who come home from work late night around this time, and then things like this happen. It’s crazy.”

The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the shooting and will determine if the officers acted appropriately.
