Oscar winner plans to send award home to parents in Carmel

An Academy Award winner credits his parents, who live in Carmel for his success.

John Ottman won the 2019 Academy Award for film editing for his work on the four-time Oscars winning film, Bohemian Rhapsody.

In his acceptance speech, Ottman gave praise to his parents for their support through out his life.

“Lastly, this goes to my parents on their fireplace mantle because they encouraged me to do whatever I wanted to do when I was a kid whether it was writing music, which was a mystery to them, or making films in their garage on Normington Way in San Jose, California,” said Ottman.

“It’s the culmination of a long journey and he’s finally reached the peak,” John’s father, John Ottman said.

John’s parents told KION they remember participating in John’s homemade films.

“If I didn’t do it right, I remember him saying: dad! dad!” John’s father, John Ottman said.

His loving parents, John and Mary, now live in Carmel and just returned from visiting their son in Los Angeles for the Oscars.

John’s mom, who was his date to the awards show, broke down in tears when her son’s name was called.

“It was heartfelt cause he’s such a good kid,” Mary Ottman said. “He’s a really good kid, very kind and generous to his friends and parents.”

“It’s the culmination of a long journey and he’s finally reached the peak,” John’s father, John Ottman said.

John want’s to give his Oscar to his parents as a thank you, but for safety reasons they decided not to take it home on their flight.

“I told them to take it home with them but we didn’t want to put it in the luggage, and get stolen, so next time I drive up there I can drive it up,” Ottman said.
