CHP: Gonzales man suspected of DUI after deadly Hwy 101 crash

A Gonzales man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after he caused a deadly four-car crash in South Monterey County, Monday, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened on Highway 101 south of Chualar around 9:30 a.m.

According to CHP, 19-year-old Jordan Flores Navarro was driving south in a silver Jeep Cherokee when he lost control.

“The silver Jeep Cherokee struck the concrete median, rotated in the air, and began to collide into oncoming northbound traffic,” said CHP.

The Jeep Cherokee hit a black Acura, a white Pontiac Grand Prix and a blue Saturn VUE.

The driver of the white Pontiac Grand Prix died at the scene. He has been identified as a 50-year-old Soledad resident.

Seven others were injured and taken to Natividad hospital.

Navarro suffered broken ribs, spinal and back fractures. He was arrested and drugs are suspected to be a factor.

“The California Highway Patrol wants to remind you driving under the influence of any substance, whether it is alcohol, cannabis, prescription medication, illegal drugs, or impairing over the counter medications is illegal and dangerous. Remember to plan ahead, designate a sober driver, ride-share, take public transportation, or make other plans. It’s not worth the risk to drive impaired,” said CHP.
