High Surf Advisory effective through Saturday
The storm is sending waves crashing into the coastline and it is expected to get stronger into the weekend.
The National Weather Service has put out a High Surf Advisory. Heavy winds pushed the waters into the usually crowded Marina State Beach on Friday.
“It’s pretty crazy in the last few days, really windy on the roads and stuff,” said Jayce Bough, a Monterey resident.
“Oh, I like it. I think it’s interesting to come on different days to see what’s going on,” said Margaret Adams, a teacher who lives in Marina.
Swells up to 17 feet were sending waves of nearly 25 feet along the beach in Marina. But for many, the storm and the scenery made for a learning experience.
“We’ve had a lot of rainbows because of all these downpours, and then it clears up. So we studied that at my class this week,” said Adams.
“Luckily it cleared up right before the sun started setting,” said Bough. “It’s a pretty good view.”
The strong waves are not done, however. The High Surf Advisory means there will be strong rip currents, beach erosion and sneaker waves. Experts say it will peak overnight and into Saturday night, potentially moving a lot of debris around.
It also comes with danger for people in the water and on shore, as the waves could sweep you out. Even surfers might want to avoid the water.
“The waves are pretty crazy today,” said Bough.
“I’m safety first. Never turn your back on the ocean. That’s really important,” said Adams.
