Deadly Valentine’s Day accident on Hwy. 17 caused by fallen tree
Highway 17 was at a standstill Thursday night after a tree fell on a car, killing a man and seriously hurting another.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened around 3:30 p.m. south of Summit Road.
“A tree fell across the northbound lanes of Highway 17 and collided with a Cadillac Escalade,” says CHP Santa Cruz.
The driver, an 85-year-old Aptos resident sustained major injuries. The passenger in the Escalade, an 84-year-old Los Altos man, later died from his injuries.
The incident involved a total of 10 cars that were hit by the tree and surrounding debris. Only the people in the Escalade suffered injuries.
