Baby hummingbird falls victim to winter storm in Salinas
The SPCA for Monterey County Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center was caring for a tiny baby hummingbird who was a victim of the winter storm, but sadly the SPCA said the hummingbird passed away.
The SPCA for Monterey County said the baby hummingbird died on Thursday morning.
According to the SPCA, during a powerful storm this week, a tree blew over on Kennedy Road in Salinas and there was a hummingbird nest in the tree.
A resident saw it happened and knew about the nest so she looked through the debris and branches until she found it. She then saw one hatchling and one egg in the tiny nest and waited for the baby bird’s parents to return. When they didn’t come back, she brought the nestling to the SPCA Wildlife Center for emergency care.
The Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center cared for the baby bird.
The hummingbird nestling is just a day old and the SPCA said the situation is “dire” because it is so young, but rescue staff are doing what they can.
The SPCA said the hatchling hummingbird so approximately the size of a coffee bean and wildlife rescue team members have to feed him with a syringe with a catheter tip.
The unhatched egg is the size of a small, oblong blueberry.
