CA otter reunited with mom

A heartwarming rescue along the central coast of California!

A baby otter was reunited with its mother!

A fisherman spotted the pup all alone in Morro Bay and called authorities.

Rescuers set out in a boat to help find its mom. They recorded the pup crying and played that audio over a bluetooth speaker in hopes the cries would alert the mother and when the mother came swimming they tossed the otter in the water!

The plan worked and the two are back together again.

Trained responders from The Marine Mammal Center, along with California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) scientist Mike Harris, rescued the pup and boarded a Morro Bay Harbor Patrol boat in search of a response from otters in the area. When they arrived at a known resting area for otters, a female responded to the pup’s vocals. Harris safely tossed the buoyant baby otter to its mother to prevent mom from being frightened away by boat noise. You can see the mother is skittish, but quickly cradles the pup and swims back to a group of otters.nnThis happy ending was made possible because the proper authorities were contacted straight away.
