Police: Watsonville man involved in standoff stole money from family

A Watsonville man was involved in a standoff with police after he apparently stole money from his family.

According to police, 36-year-old Everado Sanchez broke into his family’s home on Rodriguez Street around 7 a.m. Tuesday and stole a large amount of cash.

About 30 minutes later, an officer spotted Sanchez driving in the area of Freedom Boulevard.

“WPD officers have had several recent encounters with Sanchez and they’re aware he can be aggressive at times,” said Watsonville PD.

Sanchez reportedly refused to come out of his truck. The suspect’s truck has blacked out windows and officers could not tell if Sanchez was armed.

Police said they ordered Sanchez to come out of his truck for about 45 minutes but he refused.

A relative ultimately helped convince Sanchez to surrender.

Sanchez was arrested and booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail for felony burglary and resisting arrest. Officers also recovered some of the stolen money at the scene.
