UPDATE 01/21/19 5:55 p.m. An estimated 6,000 to 7,000 people from around Santa Cruz County marched to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in downtown Santa Cruz Monday morning.

The Santa Cruz Police Department and the NAACP Santa Cruz County branch put on the 2nd annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr March.

The march began at Cathcart and Pacific Avenue then ended with a celebration and speeches at the Civic Auditorium.

People of all ages came to not only remember Dr. King, but also to carry on his legacy.

Santa Cruz Police Chief Andy Mills says they hope to continue this tradition for years to come. One speaker at the event highlighting how important it is to be working hand and hand with law enforcement, “we go from law enforcement being the oppressor, preventing the marchers, to law enforcement being the protectors allowing marchers to march, to law enforcement partnering and being in the march.”

Other law enforcement agencies also participated including Santa Cruz CHP, Capitola Police Department, Scotts Valley Police and Santa Cruz Fire Department.

Chief Mills says this is what a united community should look like, “it should be the value of policing everywhere. that we want to be people who are inclusive and not prejudice in how we police and that we do pursue justice for everybody.”

One parent KION spoke with said she brought her children in hopes of teaching them the way in which Dr. King lived by, “as you teach your children words and language and vocabulary I want them to know the language of love and diversity and being together in a community and standing up for what we believe in” says mother of two Fifi Musclow.
