This is the third fatal pedestrian accident this year in the city. Pedestrian vehicle accidents has become a major issue in Watsonville. The city ranks fourth in California in most pedestrian vehicle accident injuries.

Residents we spoke with are taking notice too.

“Probably have a better police presence to ticket people who are ignoring pedestrians in crosswalks,” Watsonville resident Charles Perkins said. “Because i see that happen a lot.”

“Watch the traffic, don’t wait for the traffic to watch you,” Watsonville resident Tony said.

Police are working to raise awareness of the issue. Just last month KION road along with Watsonville PD as they targeted homeless people who are the most vulnerable victims of vehicle pedestrian accidents.

Officers passed out safety information about crossing the street. This is part of a new education program funded by the state.

The city has been doing their part too. In November city councilman Felipe Hernandez attended a conference that focused on eliminating pedestrian fatalities.

Police say the fatal accident is still under investigation.

The 33 -year old female drive of the truck is cooperating with the Police investigation.

Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor.
