Three suspects in the 15 hour standoff in Capitola identified

UPDATE 12/24/2018 6:15 p.m. The three suspects arrested after a 15 hour standoff in Capitola have been identified.

25 year old Jerry Robles, 34 year old Adrian Rodriguez and 28 year old Andrew Rodriguez were three of the five adults inside the home of the standoff on 44th Avenue.

Robles, one of the first to exit the home is accused of robbing the Village Liquors store at gunpoint in Aptos on Thursday.

“We spent an extended amount of time to gain cooperation. Doing it safely, using time as a benefit to us, to deescalate the situation. It eventually proved successful that they came out without any injuries,” said Sergeant Dee Baldwin with the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office.

A swat team and K-9 unit searched the house minutes after the third, and final, surrender. Rogers was the only person arrested believed to be connected to the Aptos robbery.

Two women and a young child were also found inside the Capitola Gardens home.

“The lady that lives there has been there for a couple years and it’s been like the last 6 months that they’ve (the three men) been around and for the last month or so there’s been cops at that apartment probably weekly, if not every couple days. The kids, they’re so young to be exposed to things like that honestly I feel really really bad for the kids more than anything,” says one neighbor who wanted to remain anonymous.

Neighbors said news of the incident was unsettling. “It’s disturbing. I’m tired of it. They bring a bad element to the neighborhood,” said neighbor, Greg Scott.

People that live on 44th Avenue said their once quiet neighborhood has been disrupted by drug use and other criminal activity. “I’m not really worried for myself, but I’m worried for my wife and the kids in the neighborhood,” said Scott.

Neighbors watched from a distance after being evacuated from their homes around 11, Saturday morning.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office said the standoff ended peacefully, but they don’t know why the suspects refused to surrender. “Sometimes it’s just avoiding dealing with consequences. Sometimes there are other issues that we may be not be aware of that they’re considering when they’re making decisions like this,” said Baldwin.

Two neighbors also tell KION the woman living in the apartment has been evicted by property management.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating this case.
