DUI driver ID’d in deadly Marina crash
MARINA, Calif – UPDATE: 12/6/2018 6:42 a.m.
A Pacific Grove man was arrested after a deadly crash in Marina Wednesday night. The accident happened on Highway 1 Northbound at around 5:30 p.m.
CHP say the suspect, 25-year-old Stewart Maxwell Napier was high on drugs when he crashed into the car in front of him. The driver of the 1999 Geo Tracker he hit died at the scene.
CHP said Napier was under the influence when he lost control of his GMC Sierra and slammed into the car in front of him. In a matter of seconds, the car burst into flames with the driver still inside.
“He succumbed to his injuries and unfortunately died on scene, CHP public information officer Jessica Madueno said. “When first responders arrived we were unable to get him out in time.”
Police has not revealed what drug Napier was on, but KION uncovered he has a history of drug possession including an active misdemeanor for possession of meth.
The weather may have been a factor in the accident too. Wednesday night the roads were wet and CHP say Napier was going to fast.
“For the conditions of the roadway, too fast for the conditions of the traffic it was slow its commute hour we all know, because it stops raining we can’t continue to drive the speed limit,” Madueno said.
There was a third car involved in the crash but there were no injuries. The identity of the victim who died has not been released.
