PG&E transformer blows in Soquel, thousands without power
UPDATE: 11/21/2018 12:52 p.m. Authorities responded to reports of an explosion at a post office in Santa Cruz County.
According to Aptos/La Selva Fire Protection District, the explosion was reported at 4768 Soquel Drive around 9:38 a.m. Wednesday.
Officials said a Pacific Gas and Electric transformer blew underground near the post office.
PG&E said “Before the first rain of the season or after a dry spell, dust, dirt, salt and other substances can accumulate on power lines and underground electric equipment. That residue, coupled with rain, can create a mud-like substance, which conducts electricity. That substance and the conducted electricity can damage electrical equipment and result in outages.”
Roughly 2,346 PG&E customers were without power. Power is expected to be restored by 1:15 p.m.
“We appreciate our customers’ patience while we work to turn the lights back on and urge customers to stay safe during this weather event and report any downed power lines or damaged electric equipment to 1-800-743-5000,” said PG&E.
