Multiple resources responded to fight the fire including several air tankers and helicopters.

Cal Fire Assistant Chief Rob Sherman said the terrain made the fight difficult.

“Steep, very steep,” he said. “There’s a lot of uneven terrain and a lot of rocks and debris that are falling, so our guys have to be very, very careful where they’re at.”

“It’s worrisome what’s going on especially in our unit,” Sherman continued. “Very, very dry. We’ve got a lot of initial attack fires, which we normally don’t get this time of year. We’re in the single digits to teens in our relative humidity, which is quite uncommon.”

Some residents with homes in the hills stayed in town as firefighters contained the Bear Fire. The town of Boulder Creek is only about a mile away from where the fire was.

“I heard the fire was here at Boulder Creek Road and Highway 9, and so my adrenaline just went crazy,” said Greg Anderson, a Boulder Creek resident who was working in Sunnyvale when the flames broke out.

“We looked up and heard and saw a lot of helicopters and a large fixed-wing aircraft going over,” said Chris McCann, another resident. “Then we saw a lot of smoke coming from that way over there.”

Residents said they have seen fires before in the area, but they never get used to them.

“We’ve had a couple of fires in our neighborhoods, so it’s scary because you start thinking: OK…animals, bare things, you just grab and go,” said Elizabeth McKenna.

Firefighters are still looking into what caused the Bear Fire, but residents said there is a lot of bad behavior in the area.

“There are reports bonfires in the middle of the night in the last week,” said McCann. “There’s illegal encampments, there’s a lot of junk cars and stuff like that, but certainly illegal structures.”

People living near where the fire started said they believe the property owner had buildings that were not permitted and feared this would happen.

“Ever since we moved in 12 years ago, it’s been a concern,” said one resident. “And I don’t like it, but there’s nothing I can do about it because he owns the property back there.”
