Salinas man involved in high speed chase and shooting sentenced; Watch KION’s exclusive video
A Salinas man was sentenced to 17 years in prison for leading police on a high speed chase through the city.
The chase turned into an officer-involved shooting while two of our KION/Telemundo reporters were doing a ride along with Salinas police.
The suspect, 39-year-old Darryl Haley was wanted for robbing two gas stations in Monterey in June of 2017.
The dangerous chase took place on June 13, after an officer spotted Haley driving a stolen car. Haley ran red lights, sped through residential areas, and drove down the wrong side of the road.
“During the chase, Haley used his vehicle to ram pursuing officers’ patrol cars. Haley also crashed into a van with a family inside. Ultimately, Haley became wedged between two other vehicles and officers surrounded him on foot,” said the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office.
Instead of giving up, Haley stepped on the gas and drove towards police. An officer fired six shots at Haley’s car but it didn’t stop him.
As Haley continued to try and use his car as a weapon an officer fired four more shots.
Haley’s tires were blown out and it came to a stop on an embankment. Haley tried to run but officers were able to take him into custody.
Haley was taken to Natividad and was treated for a gunshot wound to his shoulder and a wound to his hand.
On Nov.14 Haley was sentenced to 17 years in prison for committing two robberies and multiple assaults on Salinas citizens, as well as four Salinas police officers.
