“All hands on deck” for Butte County pets at Monterey County SPCA

Roxy, the 4 month old puppy, arrived at the Monterey County SPCA, with 26 other cats and dogs, Wednesday night. Staff with the SPCA rescued the young pup from a shelter in Butte County, when the flames began to threaten the only home she has ever known.

Executive Director, Scott Delucchi, said the Monterey County SPCA plans to help the Butte County shelter. He also noted that with the arrival of new animals, it’s all hands on deck. “One of the things we did this week was put out a special call to our volunteers to help with laundry. It sounds really small and insignificant, but it makes a big difference. I mean those washers and dryers are going around the clock and we had extra people come in. Extra hands are helping us this week,” said Delucchi.

As the SPCA waits for more calls from shelters in jeopardy, they mentioned how important it is that their animals that were already here, also find loving homes. This is will give the SPCA more room to properly care for animals that need help.

Residents said that in the wake of the recent devastation the communities across the state, they feel more inclined to adopt. “I know what happened in Paradise. They were pretty much devastated by the fires, so anything we can do to help out,” said Monterey resident, Skyler Russell.

The 27 animals that were rescued are now being seen and treated by veterinarians. None of these animals are up for adoption yet, but the SPCA expects Roxy, and others, to find a forever home soon after.

The SPCA is encouraging people to adopt this month, more than ever. In order to free up more room for the growing number of animals, all cats age 5 months or older can be adopted for free.
