Scotts Valley community helps California fire victims
UPDATE 11/12/18 6:00 p.m. From two hundred miles away the Scotts Valley community is coming together to help Butte County fire victims.
Last week, Scotts Valley resident, Rick Thomas began reaching out to others through social media for donations.
He didn’t expect the response he got, “by the time Saturday morning came around collections were coming in and donations were coming in I was overwhelmed and we ended up, two ladies that were there helping out they decided to go rent a truck from a friend of theirs and we had a 10 foot moving truck and we we filled the trailer, my pickup truck and that moving truck.”
He brought the first round of donations up last weekend, now after seeing how many people want to help, he’s planning to bring up another round this weekend.
“It was so heartwarming because people were feeling the way I was feeling. You know everybody wanted to step up,” says Thomas.
Donations can be brought to Bay Equity in Scotts Valley Tuesday-Friday by 5 p.m. if you can not make it during business hours Thomas can meet you at the Mount Hermon Road self storage unit where they are keeping the fire donations any time before 7 p.m.
Thomas has been in touch with volunteers in Butte County who say now they are looking for *new* items that have not been worn or used. “New clothing items, men, women, children. New underwear for all, and then also socks, that was a big thing, and they also recommended or asked for things to do with lice because I guess there is a problem or it could be a problem with that.”
Gift cards and water are other recommended donations.
Scotts Valley resident Gwen Logsdon brought several bags of donations by Monday morning. She says her cousin lost her home in the fire and this is the least she can do to help families who have to start over, “it’s devastating, and emotional to see things on tv, and like I said my cousin lost her house and they have nothing, they have nothing. So how can you not help?”
