Officer hurt, suspect arrested in Bay Area standoff

A man suspected of assaulting an Antioch police officer surrendered early Tuesday morning after a nearly five-hour standoff.

It started around 7:45 p.m. Monday when police responded to reports of a dispute at an Antioch home and were met by a man who brandished a gun.

Initial reports suggested the officer had been shot. Police later called it an assault.

The officer was treated and released from a local hospital for a non-life threatening head wound.

Dozens of police and swat team vehicles responded and nearby residents were evacuated or told to shelter in place while police negotiated with the suspect.

Just before 1 a.m. Tuesday, the man surrendered to police.
