Monterey looking into underground power lines
There’s a move to bury power lines in two Monterey County cities.
Residents have complained about the appearance of the wires over the street and fears that they could be a fire hazard.
Monterey Mayor Clyde Roberson has put underground lines on the city plan for several streets.
This would include Fremont Street, Palo Verde Avenue and Casanova Avenue.
“If Measure S is approved we’re going to be tearing up 70 percent of our streets and while we’re doing it let’s put in the conduits, let’s put in the pipes,” Mayor Roberson said.
Despite some of the advantages some residents don’t think its necessary.
“I think all they have to do is trim the trees around the power lines they’re worried about,” Monterey resident Donna Turpin said.
If done city wide, it could be a very expensive proposition. Mayor Roberson says it could about 400 million dollars.
Marina is also considering taking their power lines underground.
“The location has not been determined yet, they’re considering under grounding,” PG&E spokesperson Mayra Tostado said. “There is a meeting scheduled Monday with pg&e to further discuss the project”
