UCSC in day one of UC protests in solidarity with UC system’s patient care technical workers
Dozens of UC-Santa Cruz staff members are on strike in day one of protests against the UC system over labor negotiations regarding wages.
This is the second time UCSC along with its AFSCME Local 3299 representatives are on strike. This time it’s done so in solidarity with the university’s patient care technical staff.
Workers with job titles ranging from cafeteria cook to bus driver participated in the strike early Tuesday morning. The strike was authorized by AFSCME and will last for three days.
A similar strike over wages was held in May earlier this year.
Staff members voiced their frustration over a lack of compromise on the part of UC Administrators.
“They seem to be a little bit hard-headed on the issue of giving us a fair contract and stopping outsourcing and on bridging the gap of inequalities,” says UCSC bus driver Kevin Parks.
A portion of those participating in Tuesday morning’s strike in Santa Cruz will be a part of a contingent which will make their way to UCSF to join their protest.
