Hollister park shut down after WWII era bomb found
A Hollister dog park is shut down after the discovery of a WWII era practice bomb led the city to two other unexpected discoveries.
The Jerry Gabe Municipal Dog Park was once a former Navy base in the 1940s, it’s located at San Felipe and Fallon Road just near the the Hollister Airport.
The Hollister city manager tells us that the practice bomb was found last month, they believe it’s at least 60 years old.
It was safely removed, but the city says a scan of the area found they now have more work ahead of them as other objects they believe to be from the land’s former life as a training area for torpedo bombers are being discovered.
“What the scan has detected essentially was larger objects,” city manger William Avera said, “The practice bomb that we found is relatively small it’s probably maybe about a foot or smaller these are much larger items probably about the size of a drum, a fifty five gallon drum.
The city is still looking to hire the independent contractor to remove the two items. They say it’ll be part of a process to renovate the park altogether.
