Two Santa Cruz parks closed over public safety concerns and maintenance

UPDATE 10/17/18 6:45 p.m. Grant Park and San Lorenzo Park have both been closed until further notice.

In a Facebook post the City of Santa Cruz parks and Recreation Department said it’s “due in part to targeted maintenance and public safety.”

Those going to visit the parks were a little confused by the abrupt closures, “I was a little bummed out that I couldn’t take my dog there today, but when he told me they were cleaning up the park and there were needles found and things like that that were unsafe for people, i’m just glad about them cleaning that up,” says resident Kathleen Stuart-Findlay.

During the closure the Parks and Rec department says they will be preparing the parks for the winter rains, and doing maintenance to address public safety concerns.

“Repairs will be made to the public restrooms in response to the public safety issues that have come up,” says Eileen Cross.

The city did not specify the safety issues, but residents KION spoke with say they have an idea.

“I know that i’ve seen needles on the ground and witnessed a lot of things. If I had children it’s not a place I would bring my kids to,” says resident Jose Reyes.

He also says, “as a recovering drug addict it’s very concerning because we don’t have a lot of places to turn to, but this shouldn’t be one of the places.”

At San Lorenzo Park access to major pathways will be open during normal park hours.

All of Grant Park will be closed including picnic areas, children’s play area and the baseball field.

The city does not have an exact date the parks will be open, but expect it to be a few weeks.
