Monterey Peninsula College hosts event to support undocumented students
All week long Dreamers in Action, a club on campus at Monterey Peninsula College is advocating for undocumented students at community colleges across California. Their goal is to find a permanent solution for DACA.
We want to provide information for the students,” Pablo Ramirez said. “They don’t know what they have access to for them as college students who are undocumented.”
Multiple students say as DREAMERS, they lives in constant fear of deportation.
“Sometimes I think-I fear I’m not going to see my parents later,” Ramirez said.
“Today you see me here, but i don’t know if I’m going to make it home-if my family members are going to make it home,” Carmen Lopez said.
Pablo and Carmen are two of about 300 undocumented students at MPC.
The school supports the call for action this week.
“It’s important for them to know this is a safe place so they continue their studies,” President of MPC Walt Tribley said. “We know its very important to have higher education to improve economic and social development.”
Wednesday’s focus was to get out the vote.
“We are going to help bring people to office to help us to make a change,” Ramirez said.
Hartnell and Cabrillo Community College’s are also participating in the week long event.
The event concludes Friday with a speech from from a former undocumented student who went on to receive his doctorate from Harvard.
