Parents and kids taught about the importance of bike safety

Sunday’s Bike Safety Day brought the Monterey County Health Department and Natividad Hospital to Northridge Mall.

Their goal was to inform kids and their parents on the importance of bike safety, and in return, reduce the number of bike-related incidents they see in the emergency room, every year.

They handed out 50 free helmets to kids at the event. All of the helmets were properly sized to their heads.

Enid Donato, an Health Education Assistant at Natividad Medical Center said proper sizing is key to a safe ride.

“Make sure that the helmet is appropriately fitted for your child. Put two fingers above the eyebrow, form a “V” right below the ear, and no more than one or two fingers below the ear, so it’s nice and snug,” said Donato.

According to Natividad Hospital, there are more bike-related injuries seen in the ER than any other sports-related injury.

Natividad Hospital says parents can help by teaching their kids how to ride safe, while still having fun.
