UPDATE: Classes to resume at Gavilan View Middle School due to water main break

UPDATE 9/20/2018 2:00 a.m.: Classes will resume Thursday at Gavilan View Middle School in Salinas after a water main break near the school Wednesday however a boil water advisory is in place as a precaution.

California Water Service says repairs were made late Wednesday afternoon but say tests still need to be done on the water. Cal Water says the school administration has sealed off the water fountains and bottled water will be provided to Gavilan View students. Restrooms will be open, with hand-washing stations set up.

At least 70 other customers near the middle school have also been issued the precautionary boil water advisory for eating, drinking and cooking.

That advisory was extended to customers from 375 to 485 San Juan Grade Road; at The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch; and in Country Club Meadows (Bear Creek Court, Augusta Drive, Augusta Circle, Augusta Court, Pinehurst Lane, and Tam O’Shanter Drive).

Keep in mind once you bring your water to a rolling boil you should also allow it to cool down before ingesting or using.

Cal Water says the boil water advisory at the school will stay in place until test results confirm water quality was not impacted by the water main break.

Those wishing to use bottled water as the advisory continues may pick up a complimentary bottle from Cal-Water at its distribution center located at 381 San Juan Grade Road. You can do so from 8 am to 7 pm Thursday.

School staff told KION crews are currently working to fix the leak and repair a big hole in the road near the campus.

It’s unclear if class will resume on Thursday. Administration said parents can expect a message from Gavilan View Middle School by the end of the day, Wednesday.
