UPDATE 08/15/18 5:30PM The Watsonville Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting.
According to the WPD, officers responded to a disturbance call at a home Wednesday morning. When they arrived family members said a loved one was on drugs and hallucinating.
“We got a call for service, it was a family disturbance involving a knife, the family reported that one of their members was high on drugs hallucinating and armed with two knifes. Our officers responded to the scene, the man was not their at the time,” says Watsonville Police Chief David Honda.
About 30 minutes later officers received a call about a man throwing rocks at cars on Ohlone Parkway.
When officers arrived they approached the suspect who was carrying a large kitchen knife. The suspect lunged towards the officer and he was shot once in the torso area.
“When my officers came upon the man in the middle of the street, they saw he was armed with at least one knife, sounds like he might have been armed with two knifes, and he immediately charged the officer, and the officer was forced to discharge his service weapon,” says Chief Honda.
Main Street between Clifford Drive and Ohlone Parkway were shutdown while investigators canvased the area. The roads reopened around 4:30 p.m.
The suspect has been taken to the hospital where he remains in stable condition.
Police say for those questioning why they used that force, they say it was a split second decision. Chief Honda says, “we have tasers, we have other less lethal devices, but when confronted with a deadly force situation sometimes there’s not enough time, to respond with other tools. I think it was within under 30 seconds that shots were reported fired.”
No officers were injured during the shooting. The officer who has been identified as Matt Williams will be placed on leave during the investigation.
The investigation is now being handled by the District Attorney’s Office and Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office.
