Freshmen Focus: King City High School students ready for what the future holds

King City High School students have already said hello to the new school year but freshmen say they’ve still got some nerves as the semester rolls on.

Some are juggling athletics and education while one I spoke with is also raising livestock for fairs such as the Salinas Valley, Monterey County and San Benito County.

“In order to raise these animals you have to put a lot of hard work and dedication into it,” says freshman Sebastian Garcia. “You have to wake up early in the morning, feed them, walk them. A whole ton of things.”

Sebastian says he’s participating in livestock shows to raise money for his future.

He enjoys doing it as well, actually getting into it thanks to his dad, but understands the importance of putting his education first.

That idea isn’t lost on fellow freshmen Yareli Hernandez. She wants to major in criminal justice while attending college but her interests lean more toward her artistic side. Her inspiration?

“My cousin. She loves drawing so I would always copy her because she’s my older cousin,” says Yareli Hernandez. “I would just copy whatever she did.”

Meanwhile Elizabeth Hernandez is hoping to compete not just on the volleyball cout but also in the medical field.

“I just like helping little kids but I also wanna work in the medical field,” says Elizabeth Hernandez.

Each of the four freshmen we heard from raised concerns similar to how Elijah Clavijo summed it all up.

“How to be responsible when I’m older. How to be able to do it,” says Elijah Clavijo. He discussed paying rent and living on or off campus at UCLA or USC. “I guess that’s what worries me.”

Despite any worries each of the freshmen at King City High that I spoke with all showed confidence they can balance athletics and education along with their other responsibilities.
