New affordable housing development opens in Salinas

Hikari, a new affordable housing complex, opened its doors to residents a month ago.

The complex was named after the Japanese word for light. The project set out to beautify the east side of town.

The development is located on the the corner of Main and Rossi Street.

In the past, some families have avoided living in the neighborhood. The area is commonly known for its crime, and some said they view it as unfit for families.

Mom and resident, Miranda Martinez, said it was the perfect spot to settle down with her 2-year-old son.

“A lot of people don’t believe it’s in the best side of town. Honestly, I haven’t had a problem,” said Martinez.

Monterey County Supervisor, Luis Alejo, said they designed the complex with families in mind.

“The technology is there to make sure these places remain safe for the residents that move in,” said Alejo.

Residents said the safety features at the complex have given them peace of mind.

A gate with resident-only access is just one of the features added by project managers.

“They do have security so I think that helps. I think with anyone being here especially with a lot of people moving in are families,” said Martinez.

Martinez said that since moving to the neighborhood, she has a lot to look forward to.

“It’s been wonderful being here. I look forward to making many more memories here,” said Martinez.

Project officials said they hope to continue to add new affordable housing developments to neighborhoods in Monterey County.
