Central coast man found guilty of murdering his girlfriend for insurance money
UPDATE 8/30/18 10:50am: A man from Salinas has been found guilty of murdering his girlfriend for the insurance money. 41-year-old, Victor Cabrera, strangled Roshni Singh in her Marina home in September of 2008.
Cabrera was in debt and was the beneficiary of Singh’s $600,000 insurance policy. He worked with a partner, Francisco Agaton-Hernandez, to stage a fake robbery and cover up the crime. Agaton-Hernandez was convicted in 2011 and is serving a life sentence. Cabrera took off to Mexico, but was caught there in 2016 and extradited back to the United States.
After a three week trial Cabrera was convicted of murder, with a special circumstance allegation of murder for financial gain. He faces a life sentence without the possibility of parole and will be sentenced on September 27, 2018.
PREVIOUS STORY: A man suspected of murdering his girlfriend in 2008 was arraigned in Salinas Friday after being extradited from Mexico. Victor Cabrera pleaded not guilty to the murder of Roshni Singh.
Marina police say Cabrera had been a fugitive since September 28, 2008 when he fled to Mexico to avoid arrest.
Investigators say Singh was murdered at the couple’s home on Bayer Drive. Her body was later discovered in her own vehicle in Monterey.
Cabrera was arrested April 11, 2016 in Guadalajara, Mexico and extradited to the U.S. on Thursday, December 8, 2016.
Cabrera was booked into Monterey County jail in Salinas and is being held on $2 million bail.
He will be back in court on January 18 at 10 AM to set a date for a preliminary hearing. The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office said it does not plan to seek the death penalty.
