Aptos shooting suspect in custody following hours long standoff

UPDATE: 8/16/2018 12:44 p.m. An Aptos shooting suspect was arrested Thursday following an hours long standoff with deputies.

The shooting occurred in the 100 block of Santa Cruz Avenue around 5:45 p.m. Wednesday.

The suspect, 57-year-old Ralph Millar allegedly broke into his neighbors home and shot at her and another woman.

Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s deputies were able to get both victims out of the home.

One woman was shot and flown to a trauma center where she remains in stable condition. The other woman was injured but treated and released.

The sheriff’s office said Millar returned to his home after the shooting and refused to surrender. Neighbors in the area were evacuated from their homes.

Millar was in a standoff with authorities for more than 15 hours.

Crisis negotiators were in contact with Millar throughout the night.

“Detectives continue to investigate the reasons leading to the shooting; early information points to a misunderstanding or dispute involving one of the victims that began in late June,” said Undersheriff Craig Wilson.
