Man killed in crash down Big Sur cliff identified
UPDATE 7/30/18 6:39 pm.: A man killed after crashing over a cliff in Big Sur has been identified.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the victim has been identified as 39-year-old Anthony Joe Hernandez of Salinas.
The CHP said his car was found 280 feet down a rugged cliff south of Willow Creek Road.
The car was recovered from the bottom of the cliff on Sunday, July 29th.
The investigation is ongoing.
UPDATE: One man was killed when his car went over a Big Sur cliff, Saturday morning.
California Highway Patrol says their initial investigation shows the driver was heading northbound on Highway 1 when he was unable to negotiate a right turn, drifting into the southbound lane, then falling approximately 280 feet. The vehicle was found about a quarter-mile south of Willow Creek Road.
CHP tells KION no one else was in the vehicle.
The 911 call came in to the CHP Monterey at approximately 8:59 a.m.. A CHP helicopter was requested, but it was unable to assist because of heavy fog. The Monterey County Search and Rescue and Big Sur Fire Brigade responded to the crash.
The CHP is continuing their investigation.
This accident comes just 16 days after Oregon hiker Angela Hernandez was found alive. Hernandez’ vehicle was found off a Big Sur cliff about six miles north of Saturday’s incident.
INITIAL REPORT:
CHP is at the scene of a fatal car crash in Big Sur.
A car went off a cliff and fell 200-300 feet onto the beach below.
At least one person has died as a result of the crash.
There are efforts underway to recover a body and tow the car, but fog has caused delays.
