Seaside Measure X and SB-1 road work project list approved by city
Seaside City Council members approved a list of streets to be repaired or patched up within the next few years as part of county and state measures pushing for quality roads in California.
The proposed list allows for about $11 million worth of road work to at least start within the next couple of years.
“We should be seeing some pavement projects happening on Wheeler and maybe La Salle. Some of the bigger streets we’ll have to go through the design process first,” says Rick Riedl–City Engineer and the city staff member who ultimately presented the list to city council members this month.
Current funding from sales and gas tax revenues will only allow so much work to be done at a time, meaning the bigger streets mentioned by Riedl will take some time.
“We’re expecting 1.5 million dollars a year in revenue,” Riedl explains. “We’re going to take the Measure X funding and leverage that with a bond to look for a 10 million dollar bond so we can work on more streets earlier.”
Riedl says Measure X revenue would result in an estimated $1 million gain for the city while revenue from SB-1 would see $500,000 of revenue.
The approved street repair list comes in about $40 million short of what the city actually needs.
Due to budget constraints for the city, engineers had to come up with a more cost-effective approach.
A consultant was hired and that consultant’s team traveled around Seaside from February to April of 2018 to help compile a list of streets in dire need of repair.
“They had staff walk every street in this town and take a look at it. They checked costs to fix each street and they came up with a list so that’s how they came up with 58 million dollars,” says Riedl.
The $58 million price tag was ultimately reduced to $11 million after the list was shortened due to budget constraints the city has at this time.
Council members and engineers agree they are fine with the shortened list for now.
“It’s a huge project. 11 million dollars worth of work you have to make sure you’re spending the money correctly. I’m glad we went through the process and everyone is on board with what we wanna do now.”

Streets include Fremont, Noche Buena, Broadway, portions of Del Monte and others.
Some of the streets need sealing work while a select few need reconstruction.
