Watsonville teen arrested after bullet nearly strikes 3-year-old

A 17-year-old faces multiple charges after shooting into a home and nearly striking a sleeping 3-year-old girl.

The shooting happened on McKenzie Avenue at about 2:30 Sunday morning.

Officials say the bullet traveled through the house and the path of the bullet was about a foot above where the toddler was sleeping.

Officers were able to get a description of the suspect and as they were canvassing the neighborhood, they spotted a teen matching the suspect description. As an officer approached him, the teen tossed a gun. The officer arrested the suspect less than a block away from where the shooting happened and recovered the firearm.

The caliber of the handgun matched a casing located at the scene of the shooting.

Watsonville officers booked the teen into Santa Cruz County Juvenile Hall.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Detective Juan Sánchez at 831-768-3358.
