Santa Cruz man severely injured in surfing accident

A Santa Cruz man is in a medically-induced coma following a surfing accident at Steamer Lane.

Friends say Brian Hart was unconscious and not breathing when he was pulled from the water last Saturday. His injuries include fractures to his neck, collarbone, ribs, ankle and lower back. He also suffered severe lacerations to his head and legs.

He was taken to Valley Medical hospital in Santa Clara, where doctors will determine if he needs surgery.

According to a gofundme page, Hart is a self-employed hardwood contractor.
