Salinas man shot & killed near Dallas Avenue, second victim shot in face

Salinas police are currently investigating a fatal shooting in the vicinity of Dallas Avenue and Cortez Street.

The shooting occurred around 6:15 a.m. Tuesday.

Officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation and 911 calls reporting that someone was shot.

The victim, 35-year-old Israel Gallegos was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Salinas police, a second victim was found after officers followed a blood trail leading to a nearby home. The 47-year-old man was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“The victims live nearby and were at their car, preparing to go to work. At least one person approached and fired several rounds from a handgun. It doesn’t appear any words were exchanged between the deceased victim, Israel Gallegos (age 35), and his assailant prior to the shooting. The second victim, the 47-year-old male, ran from the scene after being shot in the face. Neither victim appear to have any gang ties and the motive for the shooting is unknown, at this time,” said Sgt. Christopher Lane.
