Pacific Grove Police officers hit Asilomar beach today for their “surf with a cop event.”
“It’s surfing with a cop because of where we are, Pacific Grove. It’s beautiful and like coffee with a cop, surfing with a cop is a way to build community,” says Chief Amy Christey.
Chief Christey is an avid surfer herself.
And kids like 6-year-old David Schnitzer have anxiously awaited hanging ten with some of their heroes.
“When I take the little waves and like hit the sand pretty hard,” says David.
His mom Julie tells us, it’s great to see officers be so welcoming, especially when they sometimes get a bad rap.
“My son is actually out on the water surfing with a police officer right now, so I’m pretty sure that’s building some bonds and changing some of those perceptions for the future,” says Julie.
Law enforcement from around the peninsula came out to help support PG police.
“Already you can see the smiles and hopefully it catches on. I’m hoping other chiefs do it in Capitola or down there in Carmel and Monterey at Del Monte Beach, so I hope it spreads,” says Christey.
And with the success of today’s event, the Chief tells us they are looking forward to hosting more like this in the future.
