Human trafficking prevention in Monterey County

The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office is aiming to put a stop to human trafficking in the area and wants the public’s help to do so.

The four factors of human trafficking cases the DA has dealt with in the past include force, fear, coercion and duress.

The amount of tourism and the large labor force in the county makes the area, like so many others, prone to humane and sex trafficking activity.

Jeannine Pacioni with the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office says there are some warning signs to keep in mind when going about your day to day life.

“Poor living conditions of labor, that’s a red flag,” Pacioni says. “If there’s surveillance of the employees that seems to be above usual–We found that in a couple of salons where employees were constantly scrutinized and being monitored.”

Pacioni adds human trafficking victims can often be found in several establishments, including truck stops, bus stations, salons and many others.

“A common thread with the prevalence of human trafficking is associated with those industries,” she explains. “It’s not because those industries are promoting it, it’s a utilization.”

The penalty for anyone caught engaging in human trafficking activity can range anywhere from 4 years to life in prison, depending on the severity and age of the victim.

What the DA wants the public to know at this time is if they see any instance where human trafficking may be occurring to please report it to the police.

To report someone who may be a trafficking victim you can call 1-888-373-7888 or you can text “Info” or “Help” to “Be Free”(233-733).
