Save Our Shores cleaning up beaches across Central Coast

A trashy beach can leave tourists and community members annoyed and Save Our Shores is looking to patch up those beaches with a series of clean ups across the Central Coast.

Salinas residents Kate and Jenny Sanchez say when they see trash on the beach, it can be a bit upsetting.

“It’s dangerous, too,” Kate and Jenny add. “You don’t know what you’re stepping into. You could cut yourself.”

It’s especially important to keep beaches clean following a big holiday celebration such as the 4th of July.

Save Our Shores is one group which asks volunteers to help out with the clean up effort and they’re doing so from July and onward.

Monterey resident Mindy Surratt says she’s all for it. Having participated in a series of beach clean ups in the past.

“We live in the area and we love to walk on the beach every day,” says Surratt. “It’s important to keep it clean so we can walk around. You’d hate to step on glass or something.”

For Eric Tosaya, a Fremont resident visiting the Central Coast (And who does so quite often as an avid golfer), people should take beach clean up seriously so kids can see people showing respect to the area.

“People can’t expect someone is gonna come behind them and clean every time,” adds Tosaya. “So they need to show respect to other people who are gonna use the area and just keep it clean.”

Plenty of beach clean ups are scheduled throughout July.
